Artist: John Ward of Hull 1798-1849
Subject: Shipping on the Humber
John Ward was the 'father' of the Hull School of painters. He specialised in finely observed marine scenes mainly in or around Hull itself. He was influenced by William Anderson and similarities in style can be seen in his early work. Although he lived and worked in his native Hull he exhibited 17 works at the RA, British Institute and Suffolk Street Galleries. His work has become highly acclaimed and sought after in recent years and was the subject of a special feature in the Ferens Art Gallery (Kingston upon Hull) exhibition of 19th Century Marine Paintings.
